How to Cut Cherry Burl Blanks

Burl wood has a unique, wavy grain derived from an abnormal growth in the tree. Cherry burl in particular has a strong, attractive grain and a warm golden color, making it a good choice for turning projects, like pens or bowls. If you have a cherry burl that you wish to turn into blanks, cut carefully and with the preservation of the grain in mind. This is a project for experienced woodworkers, and it uses equipment that can be dangerous if handled incorrectly.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the burl away from the felled cherry tree using a chainsaw to make cuts above and below the burl. While it is possible to cut the burl from a living tree, it is not advised, because it kills the tree.

    • 2

Wash the burl segment using a pressure washer to clear away any dirt or debris.

    • 3

Allow the burl to dry completely.

    • 4

Cut the bark away from the burl using a handsaw jig.

    • 5

Cut the burl into usable blanks of the size that you wish using the handsaw jig. For example, if you want to make pen blanks from your cherry burl, cut blanks that 1-by-1-by-6 inches. The blanks you make depend on the project you want to complete.
