How to Troubleshoot a Repair of a Kubota Backhoe

Tractors with backhoe attachments, such as the Kubota backhoe, use a gigantic bucket with a digging capacity to lift large amounts of dirt or other materials. These backhoes need periodic maintenance to ensure all the parts and hydraulic system are running efficiently. When problems arise with the hydraulic system that cause you to replace hoses, you need to troubleshoot the system to make certain there won't be additional repairs.

Things You'll Need

  • Drain pan
  • Hydraulic filter
  • Engine oil

Instructions

    • 1

Change the hydraulic oil in the backhoe's oil reservoir if you have had to replace hydraulic hoses due to clogs. You could have dirt or other debris in the line that could continue to damage the hoses. Place a plastic container under the reserve to catch any leftover oil that may still be in the tank after draining it to fix the hoses.

    • 2

Unscrew the hose barb from the filter screen for the return pressure hose located at the bottom of the tank. Take out the filter screen by unscrewing it from the oil reservoir hole.

    • 3

Inspect the filter for excess dirt, grime or damage. Replace with a new filter and install it with the hose barb into the reservoir tank.

    • 4

Attach the return pressure hose onto the tank. Tighten the hose clamp. Unfasten the oil cap and pour engine oil into the reservoir tank only halfway. Place on the cap and start the engine.

    • 5

Lift the backhoe arm into a raised and extended position with the bucket curled back. Turn off the engine and unscrew the oil cap. Continue to fill the reservoir tank to the fill line with the backhoe in this position to prevent overfilling the tank.

Start the engine and operate the backhoe. Inspect the operation to ensure there are no leaks in the hoses that you repaired.
