How to Add a Porch Roof to a Vertical Wall

Adding a ledger board to a vertical wall will provide a solid connection point between the porch roof and the building. Ledger boards are horizontal boards measuring anywhere from 2-by-4 to 2-by-10 inches in diameter. When building an outdoor structure such as a porch, use pressure-treated ledger boards as protection against wind, rain, humidity and other elements. Once the ledger board is secured to the building, you can attach the porch roof rafters using angle brackets.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine where you'll connect the porch roof to the existing wall. Place a mark that represents where the bottom edge of the roof joist will rest on the wall. Repeat the process at the opposite side of the wall. Snap a level line across the wall using a chalk box.

    • 2

Slide a stud finder along the snapped line and mark each stud location if the ledger location doesn't fall on a rim board. Hold the ledger board up to the wall and flush the bottom edge to the snapped line. Secure the ledger board to the wall sheathing with 16d nails at each end.

    • 3

Drill a pair of 1/4-inch holes two inches from the ledger board's top and bottom edges where each stud location is marked.

    • 4

Slip 1/2-inch lag screws with washers into each ledger board hole and thread them into the pilot holes using a socket and ratchet.

    • 5

Hook a tape measure at the end of the ledger board and lay out the location of each ceiling joist 12 to 16 inches apart. Match a joist hanger to each lay out mark on the ledger board and use 8d nails to secure them into place. Attach the porch rafters to the hangers using 8d nails.
