DIY: How to Replace the Brushes on a Pond Pump

Many pump and filtration systems use brushes to collect debris from the pond. The debris becomes entangled in the brushes and decomposes. This adds beneficial bacteria to the water. Over time, these brushes sometimes need replacing. If you built your filtration system yourself, you can easily replace the brushes in the same way you initially installed them. For commercial filters or inherited filters you'll need to first locate the brushes and determine what type of replacement is needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the electricity to your filter system.

    • 2

Remove the filter from the pond and set it on a level section of ground. You may need to disconnect it from the pump first. Some filters aren't unground so you can leave these filters in position.

    • 3

Remove the lid from the filter system by pulling up the lid or unclipping it.

    • 4

Locate the brushes in the filter system and unclip them. Set them aside.

    • 5

Clip the new brushes in position, making sure they fit tightly together. If you bought the wrong size brush, you may need to replace the brushes or add more so they are tight together.

Put the lid back on the filter and reposition it in the water. Turn on the power and let the filter start working.
