How to Pump Grey Water to Sprinklers

Grey water is non-sewage water used by homes. Most grey water is considered safe for use in the garden and can work with a sprinkler system. The key is to use a water pump that removes the grey water from a holding tank and applies enough pressure to the water for the sprinklers to function.

Instructions

    • 1

Set up your grey water storage tank in accordance with your local ordinances and home owner’s association requirements. Typically, storage tanks cannot be too close to another person’s property line and must be of sufficient capacity and strength to hold the grey water supply.

    • 2

Run the power supply for the water pump. This should always be done by a professional electrician who can confirm local standards for running lines and ensure that the proper gauge of wiring is used.

    • 3

Turn off the power breaker and connect the electrical lines. Every model is different with regard to the connection setup, but all the models will have specific instructions posted on the pump box. Follow these instructions to properly connect the power wires.

    • 4

Cover the pump with the pump housing, if the pump isn't already out of the elements. Pump housings are available at any hardware store.

    • 5

Connect the pump to the sprinkler controller by placing the red wire on the "MV/Pump" connection and the white wire on the common connection. At this point, it's safe to turn the power back on and verify that all connections are correct.

    • 6

Attach the pump to a sprinkler connection line and run a hose down to the ground.

    • 7

Connect the hose to your PVC pipes at ground level and run the pipes 1 foot underground to your sprinklers.
