How to Seal a Canvas Awning With Soy & Turpentine

Canvas awnings, whether on your patio or covering your door, are useful for blocking the light and providing an attractive decorative element. Not all canvas awnings are waterproofed, though. If you want your awning to be resistant to elements such as rain and snow, seal it with a basic mixture of oil from soybeans and turpentine, which is both quick and cost-effective.

Instructions

Measure three cups of soybean oil, and pour it into clean, dry bucket.

    • 2

Add 1½ cups of turpentine to the bucket, and stir the mixture thoroughly with a clean wooden paint stick.

    • 3

Place your canvas awning on a clean work surface. Apply a layer of the turpentine and soybean oil mixture to the surface of the awning using a paint roller or brush. Allow it to dry overnight before handling.

Turn the awning over and apply the turpentine and soybean oil mixture to the underside for additional waterproofing protection.
