How to Build Balcony Canopies

A balcony can be an attractive feature on an apartment or home, providing a space for dining, socializing or relaxing outdoors. If your balcony gets full sunlight during a portion of the day, a canopy is one way to provide shade. Instead of purchasing one, you can make your own custom canopy to fit the specific dimensions of the balcony.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area of your balcony where you plan to place the canopy. Determine the length and width of the area.

    • 2

Cut 12 sections of PVC pipe, which will form the support system for your balcony canopy. Use the measurements of the balcony area for a guide to determine the specific lengths of the pipes. Four of the sections will form a rectangle. Four more will form a rectangle of the same size, and the remaining four will connect the two rectangles, forming a sturdy self-supporting stand.

    • 3

Lay the four PVC pipe sections for one of the rectangles on the ground, arranging them in the proper position based on the dimensions of the balcony. Connect the four corners of the rectangle by popping the ends of the pipes into three-way PVC joints. Face the third joint outward in each corner. Repeat the process for the other rectangle.

    • 4

Place one of the rectangles on the ground so the third PVC joints face up. Push the four remaining pipe sections into place in the PVC joints. Turn the rectangle (with legs attached) onto its side, and snap the other rectangle into place in the PVC joints to complete the balcony canopy support system.

    • 5

Cut a piece of fabric designed for outdoor use that’s large enough to cover the top of the PVC structure, plus one extra foot.

    • 6

Spread the fabric out so it’s flat. Put the canopy frame on top of the fabric in the center.

    • 7

Cover the fabric that extends beyond the canopy frame with a layer of waterproof fabric glue. Fold this excess fabric over the PVC pipe frame to firmly attach it to the frame. Let the glue dry overnight before turning the balcony canopy upright.
