How to Build a Brick Wall Fountain

Fountains add personality and communicate one's style. Installing a fountain on a brick wall can be difficult and depends primarily on how old the brick wall is. The reason is that the older the home, the more solid the mortar between the bricks becomes and the more difficult it is to lodge screws in the mortar without it chipping and cracking.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure where the fountain will rest on the wall. ICenter the fountain at the 2 1/2 foot line from the ground. This places the top decorative part of the fountain at eye level and the bowl of the fountain at a convenient height for cleaning.

    • 2

Mark the horizontal center of the fountain against the wall. This is where you will install the metal dowel for hanging the fountain.

    • 3

Set the dowel against the wall and mark the screw holes with a pencil.

    • 4

Remove the dowel and drill the holes with a masonry drill and bit. Put your full weight against the drill; it takes much more force to drill through mortar than wood.

    • 5

Place the dowel back onto the wall and drill it into place with masonry screws. Drill the screws until they are completely flush with the dowel.

    • 6

Run the water and electrical lines from the source. If you do not have access to water or electricity near your fountain location, contact a plumber and electrician to complete these jobs, as the jobs must be up to code.

    • 7

Route the wood beams using a router to form a squared hook the same size as the metal dowel.

    • 8

Lay the fountain face down and glue the wood beam spacers to the back of the fountain. Position the spacers exactly above and below the metal dowel.

    • 9

Glue the spacers onto the back of the fountain using the appropriate concrete to wood adhesive.

    • 10

Hang the fountain on the dowel with the help of a friend. The spacers will grip the metal beam and hold the fountain firmly in place while still allowing for repair or removal.
