Types Of Boathouses

Boathouses are used to store boats and may be located on land or water. Some boathouses include living quarters and feature essential amenities, such as running water and electricity. Like other types of structures, boathouses are constructed from a variety of materials, including wood, steel and concrete.
  1. Canopies

    • Canopies are usually located next to or within a dock; they provide overhead coverage for one or more boats. A canopy typically consists of a roof and several columns, but the space can be enclosed on one or more sides with wood or water-resistant materials, such as steel. The canopy's columns can be built on top of a dock or into the seabed. Canopies are suitable for boat storage.

    Sheds

    • Sheds are large enough to store a boat or a houseboat and are sometimes situated near or on the water. Some sheds are built on land and are typically used to store small boats, such as kayaks and canoes. Sheds usually don't feature living quarters and are constructed from a variety of materials, including wood, concrete and steel.

    Residential

    • A residential boathouse provides storage for a boat and contains living quarters. Residential boathouses vary in size and provide all of the amenities that are found in regular homes, such as electricity and running water. This type of boathouse may be located near or partially on the water. If a residential boathouse is partially on the water, a special platform is required to prevent flooding. Typically, boats are stored in a garage over the water, allowing them to be driven directly into the garage.

    Commercial Boathouses

    • Commercial boathouses are places of business and might feature restaurants, living quarters and entertainment areas, such as ballrooms. Commercial boathouses are usually larger than residential boathouses and may offer services such as boat rentals or tours. This type of boathouse is usually located near or partially on the water.
