How to Add an Exterior Outlet Through Concrete

If you use electricity outside for devices like hedge trimmers, electric lawnmowers and other devices, you may want to cut down on the number of extension cords you use by adding electric outlets on the outside wall of your home. But if the lower floor of your home is made from concrete, you'll need to feed the electric line to your new outlet through the concrete. This will require a few special tools and techniques.

Instructions

    • 1

Put on safety glasses. Drill a 3/4-inch hole through the concrete wall at the position where you want to install the outlet, using an impact drill and a carbide-tip drill bit. Be sure to wear safety glasses while you're doing this.

    • 2

Measure the depth of the hole and cut a length of 3/4-inch PVC pipe to match, using a hacksaw. Insert the pipe into the hole and apply acrylic caulk around the perimeter of both ends, leaving the center of the pipe open.

    • 3

Line up the hole on the back of a weatherproof outlet box with the hole on the outside of the wall. Drive masonry screws through the mounting holes in the rear of the box and into the wall behind.

    • 4

Line up the hole on the back of a gang box with the hole in the inside portion of the wall. Drive masonry screws through the mounting holes in the rear of the box and into the wall behind.

    • 5

Feed your electrical cable through the side opening in the gang box -- make sure the power is off -- and then through the pipe in the wall. Pull out the end of the cable from the outside box.

    • 6

Remove 1/2 inch of insulation from the black and white wires of the cable and attach them to the brass and silver screws, respectively, of the outlet. Pull the slack out of the cable from the inside and attach the outlet to the outlet box with the screws at the top and bottom. Place the cover on the outlet box.

    • 7

Place the cover onto the gang box on the inside wall.
