How to Add an Extension to a Block Wall in Canvas Material

A wall constructed from concrete blocks can serve a number of purposes, ranging from preventing erosion to providing a barrier around a yard. When the wall is shorter than you’d prefer and you want additional privacy, adding an extension above with canvas is a low-cost solution. Instead of leaving the canvas blank, decorate it to add color and life to the area.

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1-x-4 wood
  • Saw
  • Pencil
  • Drill
  • Concrete screws

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of the block wall in the area you want to extend with canvas. Cut a piece of canvas to this length and to the height that you desire.

    • 2

Cut enough 1-x-4 pieces of wood to provide support for the canvas extension, so there’s one piece at each end and pieces in between at the rate of one every four feet. Make the wood pieces long enough so they extend to accommodate the height of the canvas, plus an additional 2 feet for support along the block wall.

    • 3

Measure and mark the locations with a pencil where you’ll install the wood along the block wall. Place the marks 2 feet down from the top of the wall and four feet apart from each other.

    • 4

Install the wood pieces by holding them up to the guide marks. Drill two pilot holes through the wood and into the block wall beneath. Space the pilot holes approximately 1 foot apart. Screw a concrete screw into each pilot hole.

    • 5

Line one end of the canvas material up with the wood piece on one end of the wall. Staple the canvas to the wood with stainless steel staples at the rate of one every inch. Continue the stapling process on each wood piece to complete the canvas extension along the block wall.
