Instructions

    • 1

Spread out an 8-by-10-foot canvas tarp on a flat surface. Use scissors to cut a narrow, 1/4-inch strip off the tarp around all the edges. Discard of the fabric. Use your fingers to fray the edges of the canvas to make the cover look more rustic.

    • 2

Poke a small hole in each corner of the tarp using the scissor's point about 2 inches from the edges. Use a grommet tool to attach a heavy-duty grommet to each corner in the holes.

    • 3

Drill a small hole in the top of each of the 2-by-by-2-inch poles, about 4-inches from their tops. Screw a cup hook into each of the holes. Ensure the hooks are twisted all the way in and the opening is facing up as these hooks will be supporting the weight of the canvas tarp. Set the poles aside for later use.

    • 4

Select four large pots to use as the feet of the canvas cover. Use a tape measure to determine an 8-by-10-foot rectangle on your deck and place a large pot in each corner.

    • 5

Mix a batch of quick-drying concrete following package instructions. Typically, the concrete is properly mixed when it reaches a cake batter-like consistency. Ask an assistant to hold a pice of the PVC pipe vertically in the center of the fist pot, while you fill the pot with concrete. Be careful not to get any into the pipe. Repeat on each pot. Allow the concrete to set over night.

    • 6

Hook a corner grommet to a cup hook on each of the poles. Place the bottom pole inside one of the PVC pipes. Repeat with each corner to finish putting up the canopy.
