How to Create a Pitch Block for Underground Piping

When homeowners install sewage pipes underground, they often forget the importance of a slope in the piping. Adjusting a pipe's slope ensures the water will flow out consistently without backing up into your home. To create a secure pitch for your underground piping, you will need to create a pitch block. Plumbers use pitch blocks to secure pipes from weather or earth movements.

Things You'll Need

  • Adjustable triangle
  • 4-by-4, 12-inches long
  • Straight edge
  • Pencil
  • Table saw
  • Pipe clamps
  • Screws
  • Tape measure

Instructions

    • 1

Place the adjustable triangle along one of the 4-inch-by-12-inch faces of the 4-by-4. Adjust the triangle to the desired pitch and mark each end of the triangle onto the face of the 4-by-4 with the pencil.

    • 2

Set the straight edge along the side of the 4-by-4 to connect the two marks. Draw a line from point to point across the face to determine the pitch angle.

    • 3

Cut along the pitch line with the table saw. Carefully push the wood through the saw to cut along the line.

    • 4

Measure and mark each end as well as the direct center length of the angled face of the wood, using the tape measure. Place the pitch block underground and place the pipe over top. Place one pipe clamp at each mark and attach the clamps to the wood by driving one screw through each screw hole, using the drill and the Phillips-head drill bit.
