How to Cover a Pond Using Insulated Panels

Koi ponds do not strictly need to be covered during the winter, but a floating panel cover can help keep the fish lively and help more delicate plants survive until spring. A insulated floating panel gives you an easy way to keep the pond warmer without the need to build an elaborate cage over the top of the pond. When cutting your panels, it is important to remember that you should never cover the entire surface, as the pond needs surface area open to the air to “breathe” properly.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area of your pond using a measuring tape.

    • 2

Cut enough panels of industrial bubble wrap to cover two-thirds of the pond. Depending on the size of your pond and the width of your industrial bubble wrap, you may only need one panel or you may need several.

    • 3

Seam the panels together using seam tape. Seam tape is appropriate for use in the koi pond and it will not harm your fish or your plants.

    • 4

Float the panels on top of your koi pond.

    • 5

Spray the panels with the hose to help it settle to the water’s surface.
