Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the tree and acquire enough bricks to build a circular bench to the desired height, accounting for two layers of brick below the surface.

    • 2

Dig a trench around the tree with your shovel, approximately 1 foot deep and wide enough to accommodate the desired width of the seat.

    • 3

Fill the bottom 6 inches of the hole with concrete and allow it to set.

    • 4

Mix 1 part of cement with 4 parts of builder’s sand, mixing only enough water to form thick putty. This is the mortar.

    • 5

Apply about 1/2 inch of mortar around the concrete foundation using a trowel and begin to lay the bricks, with about 1/2 inch of mortar between each one. When the first layer is done, spread mortar evenly on top and repeat. Continue to lay the bricks until the seat is at your desired width and height.

    • 6

Cover the brick seat with a smooth layer of mortar and add a surface. You can use wood, stone or tiles depending on your preference.
