How to Build Sun-Fighting Trellis

Not every plant grows well in the strong light of the day, so it might be necessary to build a small shelter from the sunlight to support these plants. A decorative trellis can create an attractive addition to your yard while helping block uncomfortable rays of sunlight. For example, if the sun shines into your house strongly from the south, create a dense trellis that allows plants to loop through it without letting too much sun through. Place it in front of the south side of your home to help fight the sunlight that comes through.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay 15 1-inch-wide, 29-inch-long wood strips in a line parallel to each other. Separate all the pieces by 1 inch of space.

    • 2

Lay a 1-inch-wide, 29-inch-long strip horizontally across the first 15 at every 1-foot interval. Shoot a staple through the horizontal pieces over every vertical strip, securing them in place.

    • 3

Flip the wooden construct onto its other side so the original 15 strips face upward. Lay a 1-inch-thick strip that is 45 inches long across the trellis so it stretches from the upper-left corner of the wood strip square down to the lower right corner with a few inches to spare.

    • 4

Add more diagonal strips of wood that are 1 inch thick and 45 inches long across the face of the original 15 wood strips. Space the diagonal strips of wood by 1 inch. The diagonal boards create holes shaped like rhomboid squares you find in geometry.

    • 5

Place a staple through each diagonal strip and into the boards beneath. Space the staples at least 2 inches apart so they stay firmly on the vertical boards beneath.

    • 6

Place the wood slats on your work table with the top side of the trellis hanging off the side. Put on glasses and gloves. Pull your hair back if it hangs lower than your shoulders.

    • 7

Turn on a circular saw. Start cutting the diagonal slats 1 inch above the vertical slats. Turn it over and trim the vertical slats in the same manner, leaving all the diagonal slats hanging 1 inch off the original 15 slats.
