How to Build a Wooden Snowplow Attachment for a Riding Lawn Mower

You can build a simple wooden snowplow attachment for a riding lawnmower if it is a tractor type. Other riding lawnmowers do not have adequate clearance, tires, traction or framework to support plowing snow. With tractor type lawnmowers, there is a hitch on the back that provides the necessary framework and thrust needed from the back wheels to move snow around. Tractor type lawnmowers also have enough power to move snow. You can build a simple attachment with studs and plywood.

Instructions

  Raise the lawnmower deck up as high as it will go and lock it in place.

  Lay three of 96-inch studs on the ground on top of each other. Using the screw gun and 4-inch screws, screw them together from the top down spacing the screws every 6-inches. Flip them over and place an equal amount of screws on this side in the same manner.

  Install a 5 1/2-inch drop hitch on the back of the lawnmower if there is not one already there. Use the bolts that come with the hitch kit and a 5/8-inch socket and ratchet. There are specific holes in the lawnmower framework for this purpose.

  Drill a hole through the beam. Use the screw gun and 9/16-inch bit to drill a hole through the end of the beam, centered, 6-inches from the end. Drop a 9/16-inch bolt through the hole.

  Slide the beam under the lawnmower. The front of the beam should extend out under the front end of the lawnmower. Pick the end of the beam up and slide the hole in the beam onto the 9/16-inch bolt. Place a washer and nut on the end of the bolt and tighten using only your fingers. The beam needs to swivel back and forth slightly.

  Walk around to the front of the lawnmower. Pick up the end of the beam. Stand the pallet on its side so that the runners are horizontal to the beam. Place the end of the beam on the bottom runner or anywhere you can off the ground.

  Screw through the front of the pallet, into the end of the beam. Use multiple 4-inch screws until it's tight.

  Cut 30 degree angles on the three short studs. Use a miter saw to cut them equally on both ends. Place one end of the angle on the sides of the beam, with the other end of the angle bracing the pallet on both sides. Use the screw gun to randomly screw them in place. Place the remaining angled stud on top the beam, angling from the top of the beam to the pallet. Screw it in place.

  Wrap a rope under the angled beams on both sides and back up to the driver's seat. Use it like an old-fashioned horse harness to lift the pallet up when you need to.
