How to Put a Lowe's Cedar Shed Together

Save money by assembling a storage building from a kit, such as the Cedarshed brand sheds from Lowe's. There are a number of Cedarshed options available depending on your storage needs as well as the amount of space you have for a shed. These sheds take at least two people to build and it is helpful to have a basic knowledge of carpentry or handyman skills. Plan on a minimum of two days to assemble the shed.

Instructions

    • 1

Put the foundation in place before building the storage shed. The type of foundation needed depends upon the size and type of Cedarshed as well as local building codes. Some sheds require a poured concrete foundation while others can be set on concrete patio stones.

    • 2

Lay out all the pieces in the kit and separate them. Check the parts in the kit with the parts list to make sure you have everything.

    • 3

Assemble the floor beginning with the joists. There are two longer boards and several boards that sandwich perpendicularly between them. Lay out the boards so that the two long boards are parallel and the shorter boards are evenly spaced perpendicularly between them. All boards are set on the narrow edge. Use one shorter board at each end so you make a square or rectangle with no overlapping edges. Attach with wood screws. Use two screws for each joint.

    • 4

Set the rest of the shorter boards spaced every 12 inches. Measure along one of the long boards from the middle of the first short board, on the end. When you reach 12 inches, make a mark. Continue making marks until you reach the other end. Each of the remaining short boards centers on these marks. Attach them with wood screws, using two screws for each joint.

    • 5

Set the plywood flooring sheets on top of the completed floor joists. Attach the plywood to the joists with 2-inch wood screws, spaced at 12-inch intervals. Place the floor onto the foundation.

    • 6

Install headers onto the wall panels. Each wall panel has a 2-by-3-inch header that is attached with wood screws. Use two 3-inch wood screws at each stud location to attach the header. Do this on all the wall panels.

    • 7

Attach the wall panels to the floor structure. Install the gable ends first. The gable ends are where the peaks of the roof are. Set one gable wall panel upright so that the outer edge of the wall framing is flush with the outer edge of the floor. On the inside of the shed, insert a 3-inch wood screw through the floor plate of the wall and into the floor. Screws are evenly spaced between wall studs. Repeat this procedure for the other gable wall.

    • 8

Raise the side wall panels and screw them into place in the same manner as you attached the gable walls. Then use five 3-inch wood screws to attach the panels to each other. Evenly space the screws and alternate the directions from which they come. For instance, if the top screw is inserted from the left of a stud, the next screw would be inserted from the right. Do this wherever wall panels meet.

    • 9

Remove the cleat from the bottom of the door frame. The cleat is not a necessary part of installation; it is put there to keep the door frame square during shipping. Install the door into the opening. Use the level to make sure that the frame is set in squarely. Use shims from the kit if necessary. Attach the door frame to the wall frame with screws.

    • 10

Install the 2-by-3-inch top plates onto the top of the wall panels. Use the 3-inch wood screws, spaced every 16 inches. Set the gable panels on the top plates and attach with 3-inch wood screws. Use at least four screws on each gable panel. Set the roofing panels into place. Begin at a gable end on one side. Use three 3-inch wood screws to attach the roof section to the gable. Then do the same thing on the opposite side. Continue adding roof sections until the other gable end is reached. Each section is attached to the previously installed section.

    • 11

Install gussets onto the roof joists inside the shed. Each roof joist gets two gussets, one on each side. Attach the gussets with 3-inch wood screws. On the outside of the shed, insert metal flashing strips under the shingles at every panel seam. This helps prevent water coming into the shed through the seams.

    • 12

Cut the roofing felt so that it is 4 inches wide. Drape the felt over the ridge in the roof and staple it into place. Set the ridge caps over the felt and use the 2-inch shingle nails to hold them in place. Ridge caps overlap each other by 1/2-inch. Once the roof is finished, set the fascia boards in place and nail them on with 1 3/4-inch finishing nails. The fascia covers the roof joist ends on the outside of the shed.

Finish the project by installing door hardware and the Cedarshed plaque.
