How to Install a Flush Grass Marker

A grass marker is a small, flat stone or bronze marker for a grave that lies in the ground -- flush with the earth’s surface. Because of the weight of larger stones, it is best to leave the installation to professionals. In addition, larger stones need to be set in concrete. Individuals, however, can install small grass markers with the dimensions of 24 by 12 by 4 inches or less without a concrete bed. As long as it is allowed by the cemetery, you can save money and add a personal touch to your loved one’s grave by installing the marker yourself.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the top surface of the grass marker. Add 2 inches to the length and width measurements. Mark a rectangle on the grass in the location where you want the marker to lie using these dimensions.

    • 2

Cut out the rectangle in the sod with the blade of a shovel. Remove the sod from inside the rectangle. Spread out some old newspapers next to where you work and place the sod you remove on the newspapers.

    • 3

Dig out the rectangle to the depth of the grass marker plus 1 inch. Put the excess dirt on the newspapers with the sod.

    • 4

Fill the hole one-third full with sand. Place the grass marker in the rectangle on the bed of sand. Push down and wiggle the monument on the bed of sand to center it in the rectangular hole. Work it down into the sand so the top is flush with the ground. Use a carpenter’s level to ensure the face of the marker is level.

    • 5

Dust off the top surface of the grass marker. Roll up the excess dirt and sod in the newspapers and throw it away.
