How to Install Pond Netting Using Rebar

A manmade pond ecosystem will suffer if too many falling leaves are allowed to sink to the bottom and decay. When leaves decay, they emit gasses. Toxic levels can build up under water, sickening or suffocating fish and other plants. It's easy to prevent leaves from hitting the water in the first place. In the early fall, set up a leaf net made of PVC pipe and secured with rebar to catch autumn leaves

Things You'll Need

  • Measuring tape
  • 1-inch PVC pipe
  • Hack saw
  • 4-way PVC pipe fitting
  • 12- to 18-inch rebar pieces
  • Mallet
  • 1-inch hole netting
  • Weights, such as bricks, rocks or logs

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the width of the pond at the widest point, then add 3 feet to that number. Divide the total in half, then cut two pieces of PVC with a hack saw to match that. For example, if the pond width measures 9 feet, add 3 feet to get 12 feet. Cut two pieces of PVC that are 6 feet long.

    • 2

Measure the length of the pond, then add 3 feet. Divide that number by half. Cut two pieces of PVC pipe to match half the length. For example, a 5-foot long pond, plus 3 feet is 8 feet. Divided, that would equal two pieces of 4-foot PVC pipe.

    • 3

Connect the PVC pieces to the 4-way PVC fitting. Place the wide pieces across from each other and the long pieces across from each other. The final PVC structure should resemble a large "X."

    • 4

Drive the rebar into the ground at the edge of the pond, angled toward the center. Hammer in two rebar at the widest locations and two at the longest locations, using a mallet. Leave half of the rebar sticking up out of the ground.

    • 5

Hold the PVC structure over the water, aligning the PVC "arms" with the rebar driven into the ground. With a partner, bend the PVC on opposite sides to slide down onto the rebar. When that is secured, move to the other sides and slide those PVC pipes onto the rebar. The result is a canopy-like frame over the pond.

    • 6

Stretch the pond netting over the PVC frame. Secure the ends with weights, such as rocks or logs, for the winter to prevent it from blowing up and over the frame.
