How to Install Keyhole Pavers

Keyhole pavers get their name from the shape of the paving stone. Seen from above, the pavers resemble a keyhole, with a hexagonal main body and a rectangular extension below. The pavers lock together into a distinctive and attractive pattern when laid on a walkway or patio. Keyhole pavers install in the same manner as normal pavers, with the exception of the set installation pattern.

Instructions

    • 1

Mark the perimeter of your walkway or patio space with marking paint.

    • 2

Dig out the soil and grass from the area inside the perimeter to a depth of 6 inches. Discard of the dirt and grass in a wheelbarrow as you proceed.

    • 3

Line the bottom of the excavated area with hardware cloth. Cut the strips of hardware cloth as necessary to cover the bottom. Overlap pieces by several inches when it's necessary to use more than one piece.

    • 4

Apply a 4-inch layer of sand to the bottom of the excavated area and smooth it with a rake.

    • 5

Place your pavers, locking them together using the keyhole pattern. As you place the pavers, tap on each with a rubber mallet to set it in the sand. Apply a level to the pavers after every few are placed to ensure they're level.

    • 6

Sprinkle sand over the pavers when they're in place and brush it into the cracks between pavers with a stiff broom.
