Examine the outside of your pole barn. Make a note of any areas that are rusty or have paint beginning to flake off or bubble. These are areas that you need to fix before beginning to paint.
Sand down the rusty, bubbling or flaking areas by using a disc sander with a sanding disk. Sand all of these areas down to bare metal.
Wipe the sanding residue off with a rag or cloth. Spray the bare metal with a primer that inhibits rust.
Mix three parts water to one part white vinegar in a small bucket. Pour this mixture into the reservoir of the pressure washer. Spray the outside surface of the pole barn and rinse with clean water.
Apply masking tape or painters tape to areas that you do not want to paint, such as doors and windows.
Pour one gallon of paint into a bucket and then add 1/4 cup of paint thinner. Mix the paint thoroughly until it is smooth enough to use in a paint sprayer. Test your thinned paint by placing 1/4 cup into a paint sprayer. You can always add more paint thinner if the paint is too thick.
Hold the paint sprayer 12 to 14 inches away from the metal. Spray the paint onto the metal surface with long, smooth strokes. Repeat this step until you have painted the entire exterior of your pole barn.
