How to Build Folding Garage Doors

Garage doors help keep out weather like rain and snow while providing privacy. Most garage doors fold in three to four locations, using a series of panels and rollers. This allows the garage door to move from a vertical position in front of your garage to a horizontal position under the garage's ceiling. Garage door kits come in pieces that you build in place, between the guiding tracks on either side of the opening.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the bottom panel face down on a flat work surface. Fit the provided weather stripping over the panel's bottom edge. Place a cable bracket on the panel, with its bottom edge overlapping the weather stripping. Drive lag screws through the bracket's screw holes and into the panel. Mount a second cable bracket on the panel's other end.

    • 2

Lay a hinge on the bottom panel's upper edge. Line up the hinge's knuckle with the panel's top and side edge. Drive lag screws through the hinge's screw holes to hold it in place. Repeat with a second hinge on the panel's other end. Measure the distance between the two hinges and divide it in half. Make a small mark on the panel's upper edge to indicate the halfway point. Center a third hinge over this mark and secure it in place with lag screws.

    • 3

Slide wheels through both of the end cable brackets and both of the end hinges. Carry the panel to the garage door opening and center it. Wrap a guiding track around the two wheels on both of the panel's sides and press its mounting brackets against the garage's framing. Drive lag screws through the brackets' screw holes.

Lay the second panel on a flat work surface. Mount a hinge on the panel's right-hand side and in the middle. Leave the left-hand hinge off. Carry the second panel to the garage door opening. Insert the wheels into the guiding tracks and lower the panel until its bottom edge rests on the first panel's top edge.

    • 5

Lift up the first panel's hinges and mark the screw hole locations on the second panel. Lower the hinges. Drill pilot holes through the screw hole markings using a drill bit slightly smaller than the lag screw diameter. Lift the hinges back up and secure them in place with lag screws. Insert a wheel into the second panel's left-hand hinge. Place the wheel in the guiding track and position the hinge against the panel's top edge. Secure it in place with lag screws.

    • 6

Mount the third panel the same way you mounted the second panel. Lift the second panel's hinges and secure them to the third panel's bottom edge. Slide the guiding tracks either in or out until they are equal distance from the garage frame but not touching it and tighten the bolt with a socket wrench.

    • 7

Position a horizontal track over one of the vertical tracks and tighten the bolts with a socket wrench to hold the two pieces together. Repeat with a second horizontal track over the other vertical track. Lift the fourth and final panel into the garage door opening and rest its bottom edge on the third panel's top edge.

Lift up the third panel's hinges and secure them to the fourth panel with lag screws. Insert wheels into the top rollers. Place the wheels into the guiding track, positioned right before the track begins its 90-degree bend, and secure the rollers in place with lag screws.
