Steel Drop Deck Vs. an Aluminum Drop Deck

There are two basic types of freight trailer decks. One is a straight deck, which is level throughout the entire deck surface. The other is a drop deck, which is designed to angle down to the ground, at least in part, allowing the truck to carry other vehicles or roll wheeled cargo up and down from the deck. Drop decks are typically made of steel or aluminum parts.
  1. Drop Deck Options

    • There are a number of drop bed options that are available for both steel and aluminum versions. For example, both may be hydraulic, both may come with load levers and lift axles, and both may have different widths and sizes. Where the type of metal comes into play most frequently is with the crossmembers, rubrails and deck floor, where thick metal plates and extruded components are used.

    Steel

    • A steel drop deck is strong, traditional deck system that tends to be less expensive than aluminum versions. Steel on drop decks may be galvanized to help prevent corrosion and make them last longer, but they can still rust, leading to the need for eventual replacement. For heavier loads and larger trailers, the strength of steel may be necessary to prevent sagging and other issues.

    Aluminum

    • Aluminum drop decks are much lighter than steel, which makes them easier to transport and use, which in turn leads to lower gas needs and money saved. While aluminum does rust, the decks are coated with layers to prevent corrosion. Aluminum may not have all the strength of steel, but it is more flexible, leading to a number of drop decks that are made entirely from aluminum to prevent wear.

    Composite

    • A drop deck choice does not have to be between steel and aluminum parts. Many drop decks are actually composite, which means they use both steel and aluminum together in their construction. This keeps the deck lightweight while also increasing the weight bearing capacity, so the drop decks can benefit from the best of both worlds.
