How to Build Shelves in a Gazebo

A gazebo is a decorative, covered area in the landscape. It is usually a place to sit down and relax. Shelves in a gazebo make the structure more functional. This gives the user a place to set down drinks and food without filling up their gazebo with lawn tables. If the gazebo is acting as a staging area for a garden, then gardening tools can be stored on the shelves. Set plants in decorative containers on the shelves to beautify the space.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area between the wooden support beams with a measuring tape. Cut the wooden boards for the shelves the same length as the measurements with a saw. Cut two wooden blocks for each shelf. The blocks measure the width of the shelf by 2 inches long.

    • 2

Mark the placement of the left side of the shelf on the wooden support beam with a pencil. The marks must be on the inside of the beams facing each other. Press a carpenter’s level across the mark and the gap between the beams. Once the level is straight then mark the other beam for the right side of the shelf.

    • 3

Line the tops of the blocks up with the marks. Screw the blocks into the beams with two wood screws using an electric screwdriver. Place the shelf board across the two mounted blocks. Screw the shelf to the blocks. Continue building shelves until you have the amount you desire.

Mask the support beams with painter’s tape. Paint the shelves with a paint designed for the outside. Use a foam brush to spread the paint into each corner. Let the paint dry and carefully peel the tape off the gazebo.
