How to Add a Workshop to a Garage

A garage owner may find it handy to set up a workshop in the small room. The area will give ready access to tools for car repairs or will support the needs of a woodworking, welding or craft shop. You may need a work area along one wall, or a space away from the main house to start a small business. Divide the garage space in half or dedicate the entire area to your workshop needs.

Instructions

    • 1
A garage can be converted to a full-size woodworking or craft shop.

Measure the area of the garage that you're going to set aside for the workshop with a measuring tape. Sketch out the area on a piece of graph paper. Create a layout on the paper that shows where the workbench and other major tools or pieces will be placed. The squares on the paper will allow you to lay out the exact measurements for the components in the work area.

    • 2

Hire a professional electrician to supply the work area with the appropriate wiring to support tools and lighting for the workshop.

    • 3

Secure pegboard sections to the wall studs over the area where the work bench will be placed or built. Use a power drill to sink wood screws through the pegboard and studs. If the walls have been covered with drywall or wood panels these must be removed before pegboard can be put in place.

    • 4

Install flooring that's conducive to the type of work that you'll be doing in the shop. For instance, if you're working with electrical products or you'll be standing for long periods of time, a rubberized mesh or non-skid floor will be a welcome addition. If the garage is built on a concrete slab you may choose to place a rubber or anti-fatigue mat in the area where you'll be standing.

    • 5

Hang shop lights over the workbench area according to the directions on the product packaging. The lights may have a set of chains that allow adjustment of their height over the bench. The lights will be plugged into an outlet that's been wired into the ceiling unless you arranged for them to be put in by the electrician.

    • 6

Set up or build a work bench in the area where you'll be working on your projects.

    • 7

Mount cabinets to the wall for hidden storage. Set up, or build, open shelving and storage units along the walls for supplies that are needed for your projects.
If you have the space, add base cabinets and countertops along the walls.

    • 8

Bring in any large tools such as a table saw, drill press or air compressor that will be useful in the shop. Make sure that there's plenty of space around any large tool for safety purposes.

    • 9

Insert pegboard hangers, shelves and bins into the holes of the perforated wall. Hang small hand tools and components on the pegboard wall area.
