How to Turn an Electric Fountain Into a Solar-Powered Fountain

Fountains are designed to introduce the relaxing sound of running water into an indoor or outdoor space. Outdoor fountains also provide a bathing area for birds, offering you an opportunity to enjoy wildlife in your yard. While most fountains run on electricity, you can convert your existing electric fountain into a solar-powered fountain.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off your existing electric water fountain and unplug it from the electrical outlet.

    • 2

Drain the water from the reservoir, and remove any decorations from the fountain, such as plants and rocks.

    • 3

Disconnect electrical wires from the water pump. The exact location of the wires may vary according to the pump model. Cut the wire as close to the wire pump as possible with a wire cutter.

    • 4

Gently remove the electric fountain pump by disconnecting it from the suction hose. If the water pump is glued to the fountain, use a putty knife or another sharp object to loosen the pump from its surface.

    • 5

Purchase a solar-powered water pump kit at a home improvement store or from online merchants. Place the solar water pump in the same location as the original electric pump. Secure the pump in place with a pump clamp or place a rock on top of the pump to anchor it.

    • 6

Connect the suction hose to the solar-powered pump. You may use the existing suction hose from the previous electric pump.

    • 7

Establish the solar panel near the water fountain in an area with full sun exposure. Run the pump wire to the solar panel. For a more attractive appearance, camouflage the wire with plants and rocks. Secure the solar panel according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

    • 8

Refill the fountain reservoir with water. Make sure the pump is covered in at least 3 inches of water.

    • 9

Turn on the solar-powered pump; this process can vary according to the pump design. Certain models do not feature an “On/Off” switch as they are activated when sunlight reaches the solar panel.

    • 10

Monitor the water flow to ensure the pump and suction hoses are working properly.
