Determine the measurements of your concrete driveway by measuring all four sides. Mark down the measurements on a piece of paper as you will need to consult them several times throughout the process.
Calculate the number of 2-by-6 inch form boards you will need to properly form up your driveway. The boards must run along all sides of the driveway and are used to keep the concrete in place.
Determine the number of wooden stakes you'll need to keep the form boards in place. Stakes need to be placed at 3-foot intervals along the outside of the form boards. You will also need two double-headed nails to secure each wooden stake to the form boards.
Calculate the amount of gravel needed for the base of your driveway. Typically, a 2-inch layer of gravel is shoveled within the form boards before the concrete is poured. To accurately estimate the amount of gravel needed, multiply the width of the driveway by the length then multiply this figure by the depth (2 inches).
Determine the cubic yards of concrete needed to complete your driveway project. To calculate the volume of concrete, multiply the dimensions of the driveway: width times length times depth. Divide the resulting total by 27 to obtain the cubic yards of concrete needed. Always add 5 to 10 percent to the total amount needed to allow for any mistakes or errors.
Remember the other tools needed to complete your concrete driveway: a shovel to excavate inside the form boards, a hammer to drive the wooden stakes into the ground and a steel trowel to finish the concrete.
