How to Make an Easy Homemade Snow Plow Out of Wood for an ATV Step-by-Step

If you get hit by a sudden snowstorm, you might not always have a snowplow at your disposal. If you have an all-terrain vehicle, you can put together an emergency snowplow using some basic materials that are easy to find. It won't be hydraulic, or solid steel, but by making it out of wood, you can have it up and running in about 30 minutes. When you're finished, take it off and stand it in the corner.

Things You'll Need

  • 2 studs, 2-by-4-by-120-inches
  • 5 1/4-inch drop hitch kit
  • 5/8-inch socket
  • 3/8-inch ratchet
  • 5/16-by-6-inch bolt
  • Washers
  • Rope

Instructions

    • 1

Place one stud flat on the ground, place the other stud on top of it. Screw them together using the cordless screw gun and 3-inch screws. Place the screws every 6 inches along the length of the studs.

    • 2

Install a 5 1/4-inch drop hitch on the back of your ATV if it doesn't already have one. There are specific holes in the frame for hitch installation. Just drop the bolts that come with the hitch kit through the holes and tighten them with a five-eighths-inch socket and ratchet.

    • 3

Drop a five-eighths-inch bolt through the end of the drop hitch. Using the cordless drill and five-eighths-inch drill bit, drill a hole through the stacked two-by-four beam 4 inches from the end.

    • 4

Slide the beam under the ATV so that the front of the beam is extending out under the front end of the ATV. Slip the five-eighths-inch bolt into the hole in the end of the beam. Place a washer and a nut on the end of the bolt and tighten -- but not too tight. It should swivel slightly from side to side.

    • 5

Stand the pallet on its side with the front end of the beam resting on the bottom runner of the pallet centered in the middle. Using the cordless gun screw four screws through the front of the pallet into the end of the beam. Walk around to the back of the pallet. Screw three screws through each side of the beam down into the pallet runner, angling them down 30 degrees.

    • 6

Place one 2-by-4-by-18-inch stud on top of the beam, angled at 60 degrees up to the back of the pallet. Place screws randomly through both ends of the stud to secure it to the beam and the back of the pallet. This is the top brace.

    • 7

Place one 2-by-4-by-18-inch stud on both sides of the beam, angled outward to the outer edge of the pallet. Screw them randomly to both sides of the beam and both sides of the pallet. These are the side braces.

    • 8

Insert a rope under the beam and through the braces. Loop the rope back up to the cockpit of the ATV. Lift up on the rope to raise the pallet.
