How to Install a Backyard Light

Backyard lighting is an attractive addition to many homes. It typically consists of low-voltage components, placed in the pattern and to the extent that you prefer. These low-voltage components are connected to and powered by your home electrical system with the help of a transformer, which reduces the power of the current to the necessary level. Low-voltage outdoor lighting components are waterproof, and the amount of power they use makes them harmless. The process of installing your own backyard lighting requires a bit of electrical skill and some basic DIY tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw a plan for your backyard lighting based on the areas you wish to illuminate and the most direct wiring path. Remember to consider that you need a place to install each fixture, the wiring it requires and a transformer to power the entire setup. Calculate what size transformer you need by adding up the wattage requirements for each light you plan to install and then adding 25 percent.

Install your transformer first. The transformer operates on a standard 120 volts of power, as provided by your home electrical system. Install your transformer in a location outside the home, where it will be out of sight, but easily reachable and convenient for running your low-voltage wires. Each brand and model transformer will have specific installation and connection instructions included with the packaging.

Run your low-voltage wires from the transformer to each lighting location. The wires need only be hidden from view. Wires can be run above or beneath the soil, under stones or along decking. Whatever path hides your wires while protecting them from possible cuts or damage is suitable. Use rubber-insulated wire staples and your hammer to fasten your wires along wooden surfaces and walls.

Install each lighting fixture. Low-voltage fixtures are available in several forms, from standing towers to small button lights. Use your wire stripper to remove a little less than an inch of rubber coating from each wire end. Install waterproof wire connectors onto each wire, and click them into place on the two fixture terminals.

Connect each wire to the transformer using the same waterproof connectors. Test each light as you install them to avoid issues later.
