How to Fix a Chain Gate That Has a Gap

A gap or hole in a chain gate not only looks unsightly but compromises the security of the property it is meant to protect. Unless fixed, the gap can increase over time, creating a large hole that provides easy access to intruders and trespassers. Instead of replacing the entire chain mesh on the gate with a new piece, you can easily patch just the damaged section. The mesh fabric is specially designed to link easily, allowing you to remove damaged sections and fasten together the new section, providing a seamless gate.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Measure 10 to 12 inches upward and several inches outward from the gap or hole in the chain gate. Tie the end of a length of rope to the fence gate over the point. Pull the rope taut and extend it 5 inches beyond the other end of the hole to form a horizontal line. Tie the rope to the fence.

    • 2

Repeat Step 1 with another length of rope along the lower edge of the gap. The ropes brace or support the chain gate during the repair process and prevent the chain from rolling when cutting the damaged section.

    • 3

Hold the measuring tape several inches higher than the top edge of the hole on one side. Extend the tape downward until it's several inches beyond the lower edge. Have an assistant draw a vertical line on the chain gate along the edge of the measuring tape with a marker. Ensure the line is on the joints along the mesh diamonds.

    • 4

Move the measuring tape to the other side of the hole and repeat the process to form another vertical line on the chain. These parallel lines will serve as vertical guidelines to help you cut the fence straight.

    • 5

Join the upper and lower corners of the two parallel lines to form horizontal lines on the gate with the marker. Ensure that the horizontal lines stretch halfway between the bends, not at the joints.

    • 6

Cut along each vertical marked line on the gate with wire cutters. Also cut along each horizontal line until the damaged section comes off. Remove the loose section and set it aside. Bend the cut ends.

    • 7

Unroll the replacement chain mesh. Place the cut section over it and mark its outlines with the marker. Cut over the marked lines with the wire cutters. Ensure that the replacement piece matches the damaged chain section so it blends in and creates a seamless patch.

    • 8

Instruct your helper to hold the replacement cutout up against the gap you created in the gate. Wind lengths of wire ties around the corresponding edges of the new cutout and surrounding chain gate. Twist the wires to secure the joint. Continue this process of securing wire ties all around the repair patch, spaced 4 to 6 inches apart.

    • 9

Untie the ropes once you've finished the repair.
