How to Redirect Sunlight for Plants

Plants need sunlight in order to survive. The sunlight is actually used to help create the sugars that plants use as nutrients. Some plants require a lot less sunlight than others to make this process, photosynthesis, occur. Such plants are placed in full or partial shade. Other plants need a lot of sunlight. Gardeners trying to cultivate such plants must find a way to redirect the sunlight to the plant. There are a few simple ways to do so.

Things You'll Need

Cut the limbs on the shade tree to direct sunlight onto the plants underneath. Unless the plant is directly under the tree, you will probably need to only prune a few branches. Use a tree saw or shears that are attached to an extendable pole. They are sold as bypass tree pruners or pruning saws.

Install a mirror to reflect light onto the plant. Place the mirror at an angle that catches the light and reflects it onto the plant. Prop the mirror up on a rock or another sturdy object that will hold the mirror through a breeze.

Wrap foil around a piece of cardboard that stands at least an inch taller or wider than the plant. Smooth the foil flat onto the cardboard and make sure the excess lays flat on the back of the cardboard. Prop the foil-wrapped board on a rock or another object that holds the board up. Place it at an angle that catches the light and reflects it onto the plant.
