How to Install a Turbidity Curtain

Turbidity curtains are also known as silt curtains or silt barriers. The job of a turbidity curtain is to contain debris in water, usually from construction or dredging. While the curtain cannot prevent all material from getting though, it does block a majority of material. The type of curtain you need depends on the water you are putting it into. For instance, ponds and other sheltered waters do not need the heavy-duty materials required by the open ocean.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the sections of curtain in a line on the shore. Sections need to be close to each other, but they do not have to touch. Cut the straps that bind the bundles. Unfurl the curtain from the flotation part of the curtain.

    • 2

Clip the snap hooks through the rings on the curtains. Each curtain has rings, so when they are laid out, the rings should be adjacent to each other and easy to connect.

    • 3

Connect the flotation sections together. Depending on the brand of curtain purchased, you may be using marine rope, shackles or connector hooks with pins.

    • 4

Attach the section closest to the water to a boat with a piece of rope. Gently pull the turbidity curtain into place, taking care not to let it twist on itself.
