How to Fix a Split Post That's Hinged

A fence post can crack under pressure, particularly if a hinge has been screwed into the post. This weakens the wood and makes it more susceptible to cracking. However, you don't need to replace the entire post if the crack is small. Instead, you can apply the appropriate adhesive and reinstall the hinge. The adhesive reinforces the fence post so it is as strong as when it was new.

Things You'll Need

  • Screwdriver
  • Exterior-grade, wood putty
  • Putty knife

Instructions

    • 1

Unscrew the hinge from the post using a screwdriver. Set the hinge and screws aside.

    • 2

Open a split that is tightly closed by wedging a flathead screwdriver into the crack. This gives you room to apply an adhesive.

    • 3

Scoop some exterior-grade wood putty on a small putty knife and work it into the back of the split. Layer the putty into the crack so it is completely full.

    • 4

      Remove the screwdriver.

    • 5

Attach a clamp around the post so the split is securely shut. Wipe up any excess putty that oozes out with a damp cloth.

    • 6

Allow the putty to cure according to manufacturer's instructions -- at least eight hours.

    • 7

Reinstall the hinge, screwing back into the now hardened putty.
