How to Cover Boring Pillars Outside on a Porch

Columns on a porch help support the porch’s roof, but they should ideally do much more for your home. If you have columns that are merely functional, take the time to turn them into something truly grand. Columns add height and dimension to your home, but if they are dull and boring, they can just as easily take away from your home’s exterior. Cover your boring columns to give your home a more dramatic effect.

Surround your columns with a professional column wrap. Column wraps may be made of plastic or wood and they come in two parts, which can then be cut down and mounted around a post. Glue is included with the column wraps to hold the two parts together. This creates an elegant and graceful facade that enhances the look of a classic or traditional home.

Paint your columns using an appropriate outdoor paint and a paintbrush. Two coats of fresh paint go a long way toward giving columns a fresh new look, and if you want to get away from a dull appearance, paint the columns something out of the ordinary, such as pink or bright green. This works well if your home dates from the Victorian era, when bright contrasting colors were in vogue.

Glue 1-by-1-inch mosaic tile to the columns in a design using a tile adhesive. This allows you to cover the columns with interesting and creative designs unique to your home. If you do not want to do the project all at once, start by giving the column a simple border and add a little to it every day or every week.

Attach one end of a long vine of fake ivy to the top of the pillar and wind the ivy around the pillar before securing it again at the bottom. You may need several ivy vines to cover a large pillar. Fake leafy vines give the home more texture and an elegant natural look.
