Prepare the area for the trellis wall and confederate jasmine one week before installation. Create a bed that is 3 to 4 feet wide and 2 feet longer than the length of the trellis. Allow room for plant growth. Measure the bed using a measuring tape and mark the area’s outline with spray paint.
Kill vegetation inside the bed using an herbicide, following product instructions. Remove the dead vegetation using a shovel and hard rake. Amend the soil with a 6-inch layer of organic material, as confederate jasmine prefers rich sites. Level the soil using the rake.
Support the trellis sheet by using 4-by-4-inch posts that are 10 feet tall. Utilize two posts on each end if the trellis wall is 6 feet wide or shorter. Use an additional center post for support if the trellis wall is 8 feet wide.
Measure and mark the bottom of the post 2 feet from its end. Mark the corners of the trellis sheet for the screw holes. Place the marks 1 inch from the bottom or top and side edges.
Situate the posts into the bed so it lines up to the edge of the trellis sheet. Dig a 2-foot hole for each post. Place a post into the hole, making sure it is the same depth as the 2-foot mark on the post. Add or remove more soil if required.
Mix quick-setting concrete, following manufacturer’s directions. Use 10 pounds for each post. Pour the mixed concrete into the hole and fill the remainder of the hole with soil. Check the posts using a level and adjust as necessary. Allow the concrete to dry, following package instructions.
Drill a screw hole at each marked corner on the trellis using a 1/4-inch drill bit. Hold the trellis sheet up against the top of the post. Line the edges of the trellis sheet evenly to the post. Hold the trellis sheet against the post, enlisting the aid of another person if necessary. Screw a 1/4-inch screw that is 1 1/4 inches long into each corner hole and into the post, securing the two together.
Dig a hole that is as deep as the confederate jasmine’s root ball. Check for root wrapping before planting and pull apart the roots using your hands if needed. Place the plant into the hole and cover with soil. Space plants 12 inches from each end of the trellis wall and then 18 inches apart. Water the area after planting to saturate the plant’s root system.
