How to Install Something Flat Over Singled Siding

Installing something flat, like the mounting plate of a light fixture, over singled siding can be a challenge. The siding extends outward from your home at an angle, so anything flat you install will also be angled out from the exterior. If you are trying to install something large, it will cover more than one siding panel, so it won’t lie flat against your home at all. Use a mounting block to get around these issues.

  • Mounting Block
  • Saw
  • Metal flashing
  • Metal snips

Instructions

    • 1

Purchase a mounting block. Siding manufacturers sell them in colors matching siding exactly; if you cannot get one from the maker of your singled siding, purchase one at a home improvement store. Paint it to match your siding as closely as possible.

    • 2

Measure the mounting block's base, noting its length and width.

    • 3

Cut a hole in the siding with the saw. Make the hole 1/2 inch taller and wider than the mounting block. This gives the mounting block adequate space if the siding expands from heat or moisture.

    • 4

Install flashing to prevent water from getting in between the siding and your home’s exterior walls. Moisture intrusion can lead to rust. Cut the flashing down to size with the metal snips, then slide it between the siding and the wall. Install the flashing on all four sides of the hole.

    • 5

Drill a hole in the mounting block large enough to accommodate wiring or plumbing, whatever it is that you need to supply the flat object you want to install.

    • 6

Nail the mounting block into place on the exterior of your home. Center it in the hole you cut so that there is a 1/4-inch gap between it and the remaining siding.

    • 7

Apply the silicon caulking between the siding and the flashing and again between the flashing and the mounting block.

    • 8

Install the mounting block’s framing cover. Snap it into place around the exterior edges of the mounting block to both improve its appearance and help keep out moisture.

    • 9

Install the flat object onto the smooth, level face of the mounting block using wood screws.
