How to Calculate the Cubic Volume of a Section of Drainage

      Measure the pipe for which you want to know the volume. You need to know the length of the pipe and the diameter of the pipe opening.

      Plug the measurements into the formula for the volume of a cylinder. The formula is pi times the radius squared times the height. Pi is 3.14, the radius is half the diameter of the pipe, and the height is the length of the pipe.

      Solve the equation. If the pipe is 24 feet long with an 8-foot diameter, the equation would be 3.14 times (4 times 4) times 24. In this case, the cubic volume is 1,205.76 cubic feet.
