Measure the distance between the concrete pillars onto which you will lay the bench top. Also measure the width the pillars span. Determine how far you want the bench top to overhang above the pillars and then record the measurements. The noted measurements give you the length and width of the mold.
Measure and cut two 2-by-4-inch wooden boards to the noted length with a handsaw. Ensure the two long boards are identical, or trim excess along the edges if required. Also cut two identical short boards for the width of the bench top.
Assemble the walls or the rectangular mold or frame for the bench top. Apply wood glue over the ends of a long strip and join a small board perpendicular to each end. Glue the ends of the second long board and press these against the ends of the small boards already attached to the other long board, forming a rectangle with square or flush corners.
Allow the glue to cure for the time specified on the label’s directions, and then hammer a pair of 16d nails into each corner for added stability.
Lay the rectangular template over the plywood and carefully trace its outline. Remove the form and cut along the lines using a saw. The plywood forms the base for the form.
Spread wood glue over the lower edges of the rectangular template before placing it over the plywood sheet. Press the rectangular form over the plywood so the glue adheres to the surface, and leave it to cure for the estimated time.
Measure and cut a sheet of mesh slightly smaller than the mold. Also measure and cut four lengths of rebar to fit along the outer edges of the mesh. Attach each rebar to the corresponding side of the mesh with rebar ties.
Spray an even layer of release agent over the inner section of the mold, ensuring complete coverage. Prepare concrete according to label directions and pour it into the mold, filling it halfway.
Smooth the top of the poured concrete with a rubber float. Gently tap the walls of the mold to ensure the concrete fills the corners, and smooth the top again.
Place the mesh and rebar grid over the concrete in the mold. Pour more concrete into the mold until 1/4 inch from the top. Smooth the top of the concrete with a float and leave it to cure for seven days.
Slide a pry bar into the walls of the mold before flipping it over, releasing the concrete. Spread masonry cement over the concrete bench pillars and set the concrete top directly on top. Leave the cement to cure.
