How to Make Patio Misters

Having a professional patio mister system installed can cost at least $1,000, depending on the length and the height of your patio. Many home improvement and hardware stores sell the components you need to make and install your own patio misters in less than one or two hours. Reduce the temperature of your patio even during the hottest days by installing your homemade patio mister along the top of your patio. The mister makes even the hottest areas more comfortable.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length of your patio where you want to install your mister line. Measure the distance from the end of the installation location to your outside faucet. Add these two measurements together.

    • 2

Add about 10 to 12 inches to your patio and faucet measurement. Cut a length of 3/8-inch polyethylene flexible misting line equal to that measurement, using a tubing cutter.

    • 3

Push about 1/2 inch of the misting line into the end of a 3/8-inch faucet connector. Use some force to push the line through the opening in the connector. The design of the connector secures the line in place.

    • 4

Mark the length of the patio onto the mister line beginning with the end opposite the faucet connector. This serves as a guide to ensure your mister heads are installed over the patio.

    • 5

Measure a distance of about 6 inches from the mark you made on the mister line. Use a palm hole punch to punch a hole through the top of the line at the 6-inch mark. Place additional holes in the line every 2 feet until you reach the end of the mister line.

    • 6

Push the barb on the back of the misting nozzle through the hole you created in the line. Install misting nozzles in each hole you created.

    • 7

Connect the faucet connector to the outdoor water faucet. Turn the water on to flush the small bits of polyethylene from the line created when you punched the holes. Turn the water off and push a 3/8-inch line end onto the open end of the mister line.

    • 8

Place a 3/8-inch C-clamp onto the mister line between each mister nozzle. Each C-clamp has a nail attached to the clamp. Secure the clamp and the line to the patio by driving the nails into the patio with a hammer. Ensure your mister nozzles sit at a 90-degree angle to the ground as you secure the line to the patio. Use additional C-clamps where necessary two secure the remainder of the line across the patio and down to your water faucet.

Turn on the water faucet to create a cooling mist over your patio. If your patio mister is longer than 50 feet, including the distance to the faucet, install an electric water pressure pump between the faucet and the end of the mister line. Simply attach a small water line from the faucet to the input connection on the pump, and the end of the mister line to the output connection.
