How to Frame a Wooden Flat Roof Carport

Though it does not offer the same amount of protection as a garage, a carport does protect vehicles from some of nature’s wrath. The shade helps keep a car cool during the summer months and the hard top keeps hail and heavy rains from lashing the car's surface. Carports may be built from a variety of materials, including wood. Building a wooden flat roof carport requires a basic framing process.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the area where you want to place the carport. Place a wood stake in the ground at each corner where you want to place a post for the carport.

    • 2

Remove the stakes one at a time and dig a 2-foot hole with a posthole digger in the place of each stake. Cut four wood posts, such as 6-inch by 6-inch posts, to the height that you want to make the carport, plus 1 foot.

    • 3

Place one post into each of the four holes. Support the posts so that they stand upright in each hole by nailing 2-inch by 4-inch boards to each side of the posts at a roughly 45-degree angle and lodging the other ends of the boards against the ground.

    • 4

Pour pre-mixed concrete into the holes at the bases of the posts. Allow the concrete to dry for the amount of time the manufacturer recommends.

    • 5

Measure between the posts that you installed. Cut two 2-inch by 12-inch boards down to the lengths between each set of posts, and nail the two boards together with nails at every corner and every 6 inches along the perimeter. Set the double-boards on top of the posts so that they sit upright on their sides, adding 12 inches to the height of the posts. Secure them to the tops of the posts with steel connectors.

    • 6

Measure between two of the double-boards that sit opposite each other. Cut 2-inch by 4-inch boards to this size. Lay the boards between the two sides every 12 inches and secure with steel connectors.

    • 7

Measure in both directions over the top of the frame. Cut plywood to this size. Place the plywood on top of the frame, then screw the plywood to the boards every 6 inches to secure it.
