How to Build Awning Supports Out of 2-by-4s

An awning can help provide protection from the harmful rays of the sun, and can keep your outdoor living space cooler during the summer months. It can also serve to shield an outdoor space from rain, snow and other precipitation. Although awnings placed over windows and doors typically do not require structural support, you might need to build supports for an awning covering a deck or patio. Building supports out of 2-by-4-inch lumber is a straightforward process that requires relatively few tools.

Instructions

    • 1

Determine the positions of the corners of the awning not attached to the side of the home. Mark these positions on the deck or patio.

    • 2

Measure the distance between the outer edge of the awning and the deck or patio with a measuring tape.

    • 3

Stand a 2-by-4-inch pressure-treated lumber section at one outer corner of the awning. Draw a line along the bottom edge of the awning frame on the lumber section. Repeat this process with a second 2-by-4-inch lumber section.

    • 4

Cut the lumber sections along the marked lines with a circular saw to form the support posts.

    • 5

Place a 2-inch post bracket on the patio or deck, directly beneath each outer awning corner. Drill through the bracket holes into the deck or patio surface; if you are attaching the bracket to a concrete patio, use a masonry bit. Insert and tighten 3-inch bolts through the brackets with a ratchet.

    • 6

Stand the lumber supports in the brackets and against the awning corners. Drive 2-inch wood screws through the brackets into the lumber sections, using a drill and a screwdriver bit. Drive 4-inch wood screws through the support posts into the wooden awning frame at 45-degree angles.

    • 7

Coat the support posts with polyurethane sealant, using a 2-inch paintbrush. Allow the sealant to dry for at least eight hours, then apply a second coat.
