How to Build a Mechanical Fountain

Few things add more visual interest to your yard or garden than a decorative water fountain. Powered by a pump that continually circulates water throughout the feature, mechanical fountains create an atmosphere of calm and permanence. You do not have spend a lot of money having a fountain put in the yard, since you can easy build one yourself. For instance, you can create a lovely fountain out of a container, a large decorative pot and a small planter bowl. A relatively simple project, making a mechanical pump-powered water fountain takes only a few hours and gives pleasure for many years.

  • Plastic tubing
  • Flat stones

Instructions

    • 1

      Select a spot for your fountain within reach of an electrical outlet for the pump's cord.

      Dig a pit about 2 inches deeper and slightly wider than the size of your container. Place two inches of pea gravel in the hole and put the container on top of the gravel.

      Take the tubing and fit it into the opening in the pump. Put the pump in the container.

      Place some flat stones in the container to stabilize it.

      Run the plastic tubing from the pump into the decorative pot through the drain hole at the bottom.

      Drill a hole in the bottom of the planter bowl. Run the tubing into the planter bowl. Connect the rigid extension piece and the nozzle to the tubing.

      Place the decorative pot over the container with the planter bowl on top of it. Apply waterproof caulk where the extension piece enters the bowl.

      Place landscaping rocks in the bowl. Surround the bottom of the pot with landscaping rocks.
