How to Build a Stone Stove

Used by tribes far from Western civilization, American settlers and outdoorsmen alike, the stone stove is an excellent cooking tool that has been passed from generation to generation. Building a primitive stove may seem like a lot of work, but the ability to cook a warm meal in the middle of the wilderness is well worth the effort. Cultures around the world each have their own unique style of stone-built stoves; as long as the earthen tool heats dinner, it is a success.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure a space on your property to set the stones for the stove. Consider the size of the iron plate that you will use and note that the stove will be slightly longer and wider.

    • 2

Lay a series of stones in a box-like shape with one end missing and the top open. The empty end of the box is where you will insert firewood and kindling so you can effectively cook with the iron plate. Secure the stones together with a layer of mortar between each large rock, using the mortar to make the surface of the stones as level and smooth as possible.

    • 3

Place the iron plate across the top of the stove after the structure is level and smooth, resting on the three sides of the box. You will want a flat cooking surface that is easy to roast on, as well as the ease of cleaning the flat plane.
