How to Board Out a Shed

Boarding out, or framing, a typical yard or garden shed is often a difficult project due to the measuring, cutting and fastening of the wood framing members. You can greatly simplify the process, however, by purchasing a pre-fabricated kit for a small shed from a manufacturer. Some kits have wall panels that take the place of conventionally framed walls, and roof panels that have already been shingled. Installing a kit of this type can be done by a single individual, although it's best to have at least one helper.

Instructions

  1. Foundation

    • 1

Mark the corners of the foundation with wooden stakes. Dig a hole a few inches deep at each corner with a shovel.

    • 2

Place pea gravel into the hole. Set a concrete block in the hole. Repeat for every corner. Dig more holes every 6 feet around the perimeter of the foundation and place concrete blocks in them depending on the size of your shed.

    • 3

Check the blocks for level by placing a 2-by-4 board over adjoining blocks and putting a 4-foot spirit level on top of the board.

    Floor

    • 4

Place a floor panel over the blocks at a corner. Screw the ledger board into the side of the panel with a drill.

    • 5

Connect another floor panel to the first by screwing it into the ledger board.

    • 6

Finish installing the floor by screwing panels to each adjoining panel.

    Walls

    • 7

Align a wall section to the edge of the flooring at one corner. Screw the panel's sole plate to the floor framing.

    • 8

Fasten an adjoining wall panel to the floor in the same way. Nail the wall panels to each other using 16d nails at the top and bottom where the end studs intersect.

    • 9

Check the panels for plumb with the spirit level. Finish the walls in this manner, checking the plans to determine the panels where the door or windows belong.

    • 10

Check for plumb again after you have installed all wall panels. Check for square by measuring between the two diagonals of the rectangle made by the wall. The measurements should match.

    Roof

    • 11

Nail the top plate boards to the tops of the wall. Fit the gable end section tongues in the grooves of the top plates.

    • 12

Place secure scaffolding on the shed floor and have a helper pass you one of the roof panels. Fit it into the tongue or groove of the gable end section.

    • 13

Place the opposing panel into the gable section in the same manner. Set the rest of panels in position using metal ties supplied by the manufacturer to connect the panels to each other.

    • 14

Fit the ridge board into the gap between the panels at the peak.

    Finish

    • 15

Screw the door to its hinges. Screw the other half of the hinges into the door opening.

    • 16

Nail the fascia boards to the eaves.

    • 17

Apply any other trim supplied by the kit manufacturer, such as corner boards or skirt boards, to the shed.
