DIY: Metal Window Well Covers

A window well cover offers the ultimate protection for your home. Window wells surround small windows that sit partially underground. This small ditch is large enough for pets, children and even adults to fall into. If your window breaks, it even gives animals and rodents access to your house. A window well cover sits on top of that small ditch and keeps animals and humans out. Making a DIY metal window cover is a fast project that costs less than a commercially made cover.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the size of the hole or ditch sitting in front of your window well. Depending on the type of window, the ditch may have a square or slightly curved design. Measure the length and width of the window well.

    • 2

Cut 2-by-4 wood boards to the size needed for your cover. The boards should match the measurements you made in the last step. Wear goggles to protect your face and mark the location of your cuts on the boards. Place a circular saw flat against the board and cut through your markings.

    • 3

Lay out the boards in the shape of your window well. Sink wood screws through the corners of each board, attaching the boards together. Sink two screws through each corner. This piece serves as the frame for the cover.

    • 4

Unroll a sheet of heavy-duty wire mesh and place the wood frame on top. Fold the wire mesh over so that it wraps around the wood frame. Sink wood screws through the wire mesh and into the frame. Attach the screws every 1 to 2 inches around the frame.

    • 5

Cut off the excess wire mesh with a pair of wire clippers. Clamp the wire clippers on the mesh and clasp down, using the clippers as you would scissors. Turn the frame over and place the well cover over your window well.
