Homemade Dryer Fire Rings

A cozy fire in the backyard can offer a place where friends and family congregate for a cool evening outside. Containing the fire is important for safety, and building a quick fire ring from a discarded clothes dryer drum is easy to do. The drums may be made from either heat-resistant plastic, porcelain or stainless steel. Only use a steel drum for a fire ring. Fires need fresh air to burn properly so it is important to create holes for ventilation.

Instructions

    • 1

Drill approximately 40 holes spaced evenly across the lower third of the drum. The holes can be in any pattern as long as they cover the drum equally.

    • 2

Clear away any debris from the fire ring area and ensure that the ground is even. For greater safety, dig a 2- to 3-inch hole in the ground for the drum to sit in. An alternative is to fill the bottom of the drum with a layer of 6-inch rocks. Either method helps prevent the drum from tipping over and upsetting the fire.

    • 3

Surround the drum along the bottom, after it is in place, with a stack of 6-inch rocks. You can extend the rocks to two or three rows to help keep feet from accidentally touching the side of the drum.
