How to Install Water Wells in Louisiana

If you have property in the state of Louisiana that is far away from a water supply, such as a river, a reservoir or municipal underground water pipes, you likely need to install a water well to have an active source of water for your home. A water well enables you to access water from the naturally occurring underground aquifer. To install a well and be in compliance with Louisiana state law, you must register the well and you must hire a licensed well contractor to do the actual work.

Instructions

    • 1

Hire a well contractor that is licensed in the state of Louisiana. You can find a list of certified well contractors on the State of Louisiana Department of Natural Resources website.

    • 2

Select a location to install the water well. The contractor will help you to choose the best possible location for the well by taking into account all factors, such as the distance to your house and existing sources of possible contamination.

    • 3

Obtain a Water Well Notification form. The form is available for download directly from the State of Louisiana Department of Natural Resources website. To be in compliance with Louisiana state law, you must submit the Water Well Notification form to the Commissioner of Conservation a minimum of 60 days before installing the well.

    • 4

Complete the form. The location of the well (including latitude and longitude), the name and business information of the well water contractor, and your name and address are some of the information you'll need to put on the form. Sign and date the form when you have filled out the required information.

    • 5

Mail the form to the Louisiana Office of Conservation via certified mail. The address for the state Office of Conservation is listed on the form.

Choose the type of water well you want to install. Although there are three different types of water well you can choose from -- drilled, dug and driven -- the type you can install may depend on your geography. For example, if your location has a lot of rock, you will have to choose a drilled well to be able to reach the water source. The contractor can help you to choose the right type of well. The contractor will then install the well according to your needs and in compliance with Louisiana state regulations.
