DIY Koi-Pond Bottom Drain

A koi pond drain is not a "drain" in the typical sense. It does not empty the pond, but works in conjunction with the pond's filter to keep the ecosystem clean for healthy koi fish. The bottom drain collects the heavy waste that sinks to the bottom of the pond and flows down the drainpipe to a basket that catches the waste. The water then filters back up into the pond by way of a water pump and filter bed, which removes smaller particles from the water.

Instructions

    • 1

Dig a 4-inch-deep and 3-inch-wide trench with a garden shovel at a 30-degree angle from the deepest spot of the unlined, empty pond up to the outside edge of the pond.

    • 2

Determine the angle degrees by setting a carpenter’s level inside the trench and then lift it until the measuring bubble is in the center of the bubble tube.

    • 3

Measure the angle under the level with a protractor to make sure it is 30 degrees. The trench should be long enough to reach the side of the pond where the filter is located.

    • 4

Place a 3-inch-diameter, PVC elbow pipe into the lowest spot of the pond bottom so the bottom elbow pipe follows the length of the trench.

    • 5

Apply ABS glue around the bottom of the koi pond drain fitting using a 1-inch bristle brush. Apply more glue around the inside top of the PVC elbow and attach it to the bottom of the drain.

    • 6

Attach a long piece of PVC pipe to the bottom of the drain elbow, using a PVC coupling. The length of the PVC pipe depends upon the size of the pond. The PVC pipe should reach the edge of the pond while lying in the trench.

    • 7

Brush ABS glue around the outside end of the PVC pipe and attach it to the filter and pump unit at the edge of the pond. Another elbow may be required to bring the pipe up to the filter.
