How to Protect Wiring in a Splashwell Area

Boats with low transoms commonly feature higher inner walls, which creates an area known as a splashwell. This area is designed to catch any water that splashes over the transom. This water is diverted from the splashwell via scuppers, which only permit the flow of water from the boat without allowing water to enter the splashwell. In some cases, wiring for electrical features may be placed inside the splashwell area, and saltwater entering this area may damage the wiring. Protecting this wiring is a fairly straightforward process.

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the wiring inside of the splashwell area. Check to ensure that the insulation coating the wiring is intact. Wipe the wiring dry with a clean cloth to remove any accumulated moisture or debris.

    • 2

Fill a spray bottle with waterproof lubricant, which you can obtain from boating shops and some hardware stores.

    • 3

Spray the wire insulation with waterproof lubricant until the wires are completely coated. Allow the lubricant to gel for at least 48 hours before operating the boat.

    • 4

Repeat the process of coating wiring with waterproof lubricant every 30 to 60 days to maximize protection of the boat wiring.
